VideoString is an interactive Flash application that allows users to explore the evolution from written and spoken language to pictorial video communication by creating linear, syntactical, “sentences” out of short video clips.

User Feedback Survey

This survey should only take a few minutes. Please answer as completely as possible, so that I can figure out where I need to go with this project. Thank you for your help and support.

*Update: The survey has been taken offline temporarily due to a landslide of spam. If you have comments, please answer these questions using the contact information link on the top right. Thanks for everyone who has commented already!

Your Name (optional)

How did you find VideoString?

I: Please take a minute to tell me about the circumstances under which you viewed the project, so I can figure out if any particular systems are currently problematic

1. What speed is the internet connection you used to view the project?

2. What kind of computer were you using to view the project? (Mac, PC, Linux, Etc)

3. What internet web browser were you using to view the project? (name and version)

4. Did the project load properly?

5. Did you have any other technical problems viewing or using the program?

II: The video is obviously not all there yet. I decided to build the program before shooting all the video so that it would be easier to see what was working and what wasn't.

1. Do you like the length of the videos? Would you rather they be longer or shorter than they are?

2. What do you wish the sound was like that accompanied the video playback?

3. Did you have any additional suggestions or comments concerning the existing video clips and/or ideas for future ones?

III: The program's user interface is just in a conceptual stage right now. I would love to know:

1. Did you understand what to do immediately, or was the program confusing at first?

---- If it was confusing, what would make it easier to understand?

2. Do you find the current layout easy to use and to understand?

---- If you were AT ALL confused, please tell me what you would change and why it would be helpful to you.

3. If you could add an additional button in the program (or more) that would make it easier and/or more interesting to you, what would it do?

---- Example: The shuffle button re-organizes unused tiles so that it is easier to find words. What functions do you wish for?

4. If you could add or change one function of the program (or more) what would you change?

---- Example: The colors change when you press the colored squares. The page moves aside while the video plays. What else can I add? Please don't be shy with these!

5. Do you have any artistic layout/design suggestions or critiques?

Thank you so much for completing my survey. This will help me so much to make the project awesome!

Theoretical Statement Certainly the first great step in human communication, and probably the greatest intellectual achievement in all of human history, was language. Language must have existed, at least in a primitive form, for 100,000 years to date (Schramm 27). All early languages evolved away from pictographs and towards non-representational, symbolic coding (Schramm 54). This coding has, inherent to it, two forms of structural organization...

Self Criticism As an artist, I set out to create a stimulating environment in which users can explore the syntagmatic way in which verbal language is used, and consider how that translates into a rise in pictorial time-based media. By substituting video clips for words, it quickly becomes clear that these multi-textured real-world representations are not paradigmatically isolated in the same way as individual vocabulary words are...
