| Introduction to Proposal Mass communication is evolving and expanding as new technologies and/or techniques become readily available. As video production becomes widely accessible, it is important to consider the possible changes that will allow us to make the most out of this new form of mass communication. This project will demonstrate, in a very literal way, some of the differences between written language and video by attempting... |
Theoretical Statement Certainly the first great step in human communication, and probably the greatest intellectual achievement in all of human history, was language. Language must have existed, at least in a primitive form, for 100,000 years to date (Schramm 27). All early languages evolved away from pictographs and towards non-representational, symbolic coding (Schramm 54). This coding has, inherent to it, two forms of structural organization... |
About VideoString:
Basic Directions:
1. First make a sentence, poem, or message by dragging and dropping
word tiles onto the white "paper" area.
2. Hit shuffle as often as you like, in order to bring new words to the front.
3. Hit play to view your creation as a movie!
(play is the white and green triangle in the lower left corner of the black screen)
4. Want to start again? Clear will remove all your tiles from the page.
5. The small gray squares below the Clear button allow you to randomly select
words that are of a certain part of speech, for a different kind control.
Playback Options:
Once you have played your movie, you will be offered a variety of new options.
1. Video clips are chosen randomly from a bank of choices associated with each
word. If you choose the "Play Movie Again" button, videostring will play back
the exact video that you just watched, using all the same clips.
2. To spice things up, choose "Play New Version". Your words will be saved,
but new random clips will be played to illustrate them, so you may see a very
different movie every time you hit this button.
Saving and Making Changes:
Once you have played your movie, you will be offered a variety of new options.
1. Videostring allows you to save exact replicas of movies you have created. In
order to save a movie, simply click the "URL of Movie" button and your browser
will open your new saved movie. At this point you can bookmark the link, or
copy it from your browser's address bar and send it to a friend. Use it just like
any other link.
2. If you would like to change some of the words in your poem without deleting it,
simply choose "Edit Poem" and you will be taken back to your work in progress.
3. If you are not happy with your video, and want to clear your previous poem
and start with a clean slate, choose "Start Over"
Remember:
Only words that are within the white slip of paper will play in your final movie.
Extras:
1. The background color can be changed by selecting from the colored squares
on the lower lefthand side of the application, by the videostring guy.
Enjoy!
